Sofia, BUL
October 30-November 4, 2012
WTA International – $750,000

Singles
Sredets group
Maria Kirilenko (RUS)
Nadia Petrova (RUS)
Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL)
Jie Zheng (CHN)

Maria Kirilenko (RUS) defeated Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) : 6-1, 6-4
« I had never played against Tsvetana before. I saw a couple of games when she played yesterday, but it’s always different just seeing the player and actually playing them. I decided to just see how it went the first couple of games, and then figure out what to do from there. I did everything right in the first set, I think. Everything was tighter in the second set, but that’s normal, and I’m happy I could finish it in straight sets. »

Nadia Petrova (RUS) def. Maria Kirilenko (RUS) : 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-3
« I’m very sorry that I cannot continue to play my matches here at the Qatar Airways Tournament Of Champions Sofia. It was such an honor to receive the wildcard and I just want to thank Tournament Director Stefan Tzvetkov for giving me the chance to compete here in Sofia. Unfortunately with this illness (upper respiratory illness) I can’t finish the tournament as I’d have wished, but I’ve really enjoyed my time in Bulgaria and hope to be back. »

Istanbul : Maria and Nadia win the WTA Championship !

TEB-BNP Paribas WTA Championships

Istanbul, TUR
October 23-28, 2012
Tour Championship – $4,900,000

Doubles with Nadia Petrova (RUS)
- Semifinal : won against Sara Errani (ITA) / Roberta Vinci (ITA), 1-6, 6-3, 10-4
- Final : won against Andrea Hlavackova (CZE) / Lucie Hradecka (CZE), 6-1, 6-4

Nadia Petrova : « I’m very proud – I think we played very solid tennis today. We were calm and in control of the game from the beginning, and we didn’t lose momentum in the second set. Also, Maria was very brave, holding serve in the last game from two break points down. Our goal this season was just to play the Olympics and win a medal, and we achieved that, and now we’re here winning this title. It’s a great way to finish off the doubles season. We have had such a great year. »

Maria Kirilenko : « We felt we could dominate the game today – it sounds simple, but really it’s quite difficult. We’re happy to win another title together. It was so difficult to qualify for this tournament – we only did it last week in Moscow – so to be the last team in and win it is just great. We had a great tournament here and this is an amazing feeling. »

- Round of 16 : won against Yaroslava Shvedova (KAZ), 7-5, 6-4
« This year Slava has beaten good players, and she started at such a high level today. For me it was difficult to show her something as well, but then I won the seven games and changed the match. I found the key to beat her and started playing more aggressive, and finally I won, so I’m happy. »

- Quarterfinal : Sofia Arvidsson (SUE) won, 6-3, 6-3
« Maria’s a tough player, a very aggressive player, so I knew I had to serve well and hit the ball deep today so she couldn’t go in the court, Arvidsson said. I was a little bit nervous because this is a very big tournament, but I was able to play through it. I’m happy with the win and look forward to the semifinals. »

Maria and Nadia : « We are going to Istanbul »

Maria and Nadia Petrova play this week the doubles WTA Championships in Istanbul.

When do you plan to go to Istanbul and how will you prepare for the competition ? Will you celebrate ?
Nadia Petrova : We are going to Istanbul, I guess it will be on Tuesday. We will have to acclimatize and to adjust to the surface. I think we will celebrate today (saturday) because it’s an important win. The match was tough. I will be a friendly dinner. We have to relax a little bit. We have emotions we have to get rid of. And the step on court composed.

Maria, after yesterday’s match you said you weren’t feeling very well. Did it affect your game today ?
I guess it was good for me that I wasn’t playing the singles today. We stepped on court fresh and everything went well. I had to cover only the half of the court so I didn’t have to run a lot. […] I could show a high level of game and win.

Singles are the priority for you. When did the doubles move to the first priority this year ?
N.P. : The Olympics, of course. We wanted to win a medal and we could do it. It was tough. As well as the road to the Istanbul had been. Though we didn’t play a lot of matches together. We played the first matches very well together. […] It’s nice to play in Istanbul the WTA Championship in doubles.

Was it important for you that you played against your concurrent and that they didn’t fall before this stage of the tournament ?
N.P. : It’s very good that we met here. […] The girls play very well and they have won a lot of tournament lately. […] It’s good everything was decided today.

Do you plan to play together in the next year?
M.K. : We decided to form up our duo especially for the Olympics. […] Next year we’ll see.
N.P. : We’re more singles players so…[…] Maria had a great year and I think she should concentrate on singles. If I were her I would do this. […] I think they is no very strong top 10…Caroline Wozniacki had three sets today…And Sam Stosur against Ana Ivanovic too…[…] With [Maria’s] ranking I think she can be in to 10…
M.K. : My ranking?
N.P. : (laughing) Yeah.
M.K. : Ok. You’ll be my coach! (laughing)

Three duos playing in Istanbul are pretty tough opponents. But who don’t to play against ?
M.K. : Are the Williams playing there?

No.
M.K. : Thanks God! (laughing)
N.P. : Every [duo] is tough and deserves to be there. It’s tough to play with such format with decisive point…
M.K. : They also have decisive points?
N.P. : I think they do. They are all experienced and #1…They have 2 Grand Slams. […] Everyone is there.
