    • More higher ranked players in the draw. Maria was only 1 off the MD, but needed someone to pull out. So she plays qualies

  1. (1/wc)Maria Kirilenko (RUS) def Varvara Lepchenko (USA) 1-6 6-2 7-6

A tough 1st round, but Maria needed this for what lies ahead

  2. For the first round of the first tournament of the year, any win is a good win. Doesn’t matter too much how.

  3. A win is a win, for sure. Maria really had to battle to get it down 2-5 and facing a match point. Shows some good determination. Let’s see how she does against the Swede.

  4. Maria did not get a point on her final service game in the first set losing 3-6 to Sofia!! Come on Maria did deep, like you did in the 1st round quali.

  5. Maria literally blown away by Arvidsson in this match 6-3, 6-0 Maria only won 38 out of 100 points. Not a very positive start to her season.

  6. hmh, I think Maria wasn’t 100% fit today. That match was very hard yesterday, maybe she has got a small injury which I don’t want hope. I couldn’t see the matches because there weren’t any streams, if she has a small injury, then I hope she will come back very fast, so that she can play AO.

  7. What a let down! She left her serve in the locker room. Only 50% of her 1st serves in. Not a good start to the season at all.

  8. As a rule, Maria never starts the season well. But this is a real blow. Playing this badly, I doubt now if playing Hobart instead would have made any difference. Perhaps more time on the practice court is needed.

    • Jim if she had played the 1st week in Auckland that would have given her some court time before Sydney or Hobart. Losing so badly to a lower ranked player yet again, and the AO next week. Not good.

  9. go maria ! you gonna do a lot better than this in AO so good speed ! i hoping for you maria to win AO this year in singles and doubles . you can do it maria . im a great fan of you and hoping 2012 will be very good for you with many wins in grand slam . go maria !

  10. Not a good start at all for Makiri. I hope she’ll find the cause of that asap, because she’s some points to defend in AO! She’s such a good player but she needs to be more regular and to exceed in a particular year to reach the top. That’s the most difficult part in a tennis career. You can do it Maria !

  11. No problem maria. It,s no easy starting matchs(Nadal and Federer lost the first season,s match, too). The important is to be fitness in Australian Open. You have doubles for refine your aim with your new racquet before Australian Open.Good luck there¡

  12. Masha, I was angry with you in a first time because I was sooo disapointed you lost to Arvidsson that quickly :( Maybe it’s because of your racket, you’re not used to this one but now let’s focus on the AO and try to improve your game playing doubles with Nadia !! come on mash’

  13. Without seeing the match, this result doesn’t look great. Perhaps the narrow win in R1 gave a true indication of her present form. Maria must have been very confident of her game by opting to play just one warm up event. With a new racquet to get used too maybe too confident.

  14. Perhaps Masha/Nadia are not as dynamic a duo as Team Vikiri, but they are winning. Plus they won Moscow, and the other teams are obviously out for the titles, trophy, points and money. Huber and Raymond in the QF’s and it will be tough for sure. If Vika has been her partner I would take Vikiri as the winners. But not sure how it will go with Nadia. I still think they do not have the rapport yet. As always, we will see ;)

  15. Great win in the doubles. Maria has clearly put her disappointing singles performances of last week behind her.Shrewd analysis as always from JimM. No doubt he has considered that NP who is a top doubles player at the moment, whilst slightly declining as a singles player might be a better doubles partner for Maria this season than VA, who, given her very high singles ranking, will surely put her singles matches way ahead of any doubles considerations.

  16. Maria had a set point at 5-2 at 40-30 and double faulted in the first set and they lost the point at 40-40. I had to head to bed then, but at 5-3 I had a feeling the match had changed in Huber/Raymond’s favour. It obviously did as they won 7-6)(6) 6-4. It is of course that the Olympics in London precipitated the change to Petrova and I do feel this pair is quite competitive, though Maria and Vika had magic when they were together. Perhaps, after the Summer Olympics, they can join forces again. I am not sure if the Russian Fed Tennis Association may allow that, just not certain the politics involved here with that. The stream of this match was lost at 1-1, but Maria looked sweet in her tight shorts!!
